The Aquaculture Association of Southern Africa (AASA) was established in the late 1980's in order to represent the interest of the then fledgling aquaculture industry in Southern Africa. The Association has since developed into a structure with representation from the various sectors contributing towards the aquaculture industry of the region, including marine species such as oysters, mussels, abalone and prawns; freshwater species such as trout, catfish, tilapia, ornamental fishes; as well as service providers such as feed companies, equipment suppliers and veterinary services.

The objectives of the Association is to contribute towards the development of aquaculture in Southern Africa through effective representation and dissemination of information. The Association undertakes to provide the following services to its members:

Effective representation of interests on provincial, national and international forums.
The organisation of a biannual Conference with international representation.
A bi-monthly newsletter service with quality content and opportunities to contribute.
The development and maintenance of a website structure and associated services.
To facilitate the flow of information between its members and associated interest groups.

The world aquaculture industry contributes about 30% to total food fish production (36 million tons, net value of US$52 billion, 1998). World aquaculture production has realised an increase of over 40 percent over the previous two decades, with aquaculture making up the difference between rising demand and the stagnant supplies from capture fisheries. Africa is producing approximately 6 percent (570 000 tons) of the total world catch, with South Africa contributing respectively 9 percent and 0.5 percent to Africa's and total world catch.

South African aquaculture production, though limited in its contribution to Africa's and global production, has shown a significant increase over the past decade. Total production and value has increased from 3 000 tons (R51 million) in 1997 to 4 030 tons (R146 million) in 2000. This reflects an increased of 31 percent in weight and 35 percent in value from 1997 to 2000.
